Sea-View Room
Wake to the water, every morning
A traditional clay-tile boutique villa where you wake to the waves — three minutes from Malpe Beach, and a world away from the everyday.
Set on the quiet shore of Malpe, Sulo Villa is a five-bedroom home wrapped in the warm laterite and clay-tile architecture of coastal Karnataka — a place to slow down and simply be.
Sulo Villa was named by Dr. Madhavi Gunasheela — physician and author — in loving memory of her mother, Dr. Sulochana Gunasheela, one of South India's most respected pioneers of women's medicine and founder of the renowned Gunasheela hospital. It turns a family's lifelong devotion to care into rest by the sea.
Read Our StoryLaterite-red walls, a hand-laid clay-tile roof, wooden ceilings, and windows that frame the palms and the sea. Every corner is designed to feel less like a hotel and more like coming home — the kitchen open, the days written by the tide.

Some places are built. Sulo Villa was given a name — and with it, a story that began long before the first wave ever broke on its shore.
Sulo Villa was named by her daughter, Dr. Madhavi Gunasheela, in loving memory of her mother. To those who knew her, “Sulo” was more than a name — it was a byword for warmth, courage, and an unshakeable belief that care should feel like family. This home by Malpe Beach is a quiet tribute to her, where her spirit of hospitality lives on beside the sea she loved.
In 1975, Dr. Sulochana Gunasheela co-founded the Gunasheela Surgical and Maternity Hospital in Bangalore with a singular vision: to bring families the joy of parenthood through science and compassion in equal measure. Trained in advanced reproductive medicine at Johns Hopkins, she went on to make history at home — and built an institution that has since touched more than 2.7 lakh families.
Sulo Villa was envisioned by Dr. Madhavi N Gunasheela, daughter of Dr. Sulochana — and, in many ways, an heir to both her mother's gift for care and her own quiet artistry. Born in Bangalore, she trained in medicine at home before earning a Diplomate of the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation in New York, then returned to Bangalore to practice.
Hers has always been a life of two callings: healing and storytelling. She wrote on health and wellbeing for The Times of India's Wellness Times and Deccan Herald, and in time turned to fiction — publishing a collection of short stories, A Brigand for a Night and Other Tales, and the crime-thriller novel If Only They Knew.
It is this rare blend — a doctor's attentiveness and a writer's eye for atmosphere — that shaped the villa. She named it Sulo, for her mother, so that a name that once meant comfort to countless families would come to mean comfort by the sea.
“Not treatment, but rest. Not a clinic, but a coastal home where guests are looked after like family, and the days are written by the tide.”
When a family has spent fifty years caring for people at their most vulnerable, “hospitality” means something more exacting. At Sulo Villa it shows in the details guests notice and the ones they don't — spotless rooms, genuine warmth, and the sense that someone has thought carefully about your comfort.
Set just steps from Malpe Beach in Udupi, Sulo Villa is a five-bedroom home wrapped in the warm clay-tile architecture of coastal Karnataka. Sea-view rooms, a lush garden, home-cooked vegetarian breakfasts, and the endless sound of the waves make it a place to slow down — whether you come for a family holiday, a quiet workation, or simply to breathe.

The beach is a three-minute walk, and the rest of coastal Karnataka unfolds from there — islands, watersports, temples and quiet sunsets, all within easy reach of the villa.
Sulo Villa sits at Vadabandeshwara, on the quiet edge of Malpe — close enough to walk to the sand, central enough that the islands, the harbour and Udupi's famous temple are all a short ride away.
A wide arc of clean golden sand, just three minutes on foot from the villa gate. Mornings are for quiet walks and the fishing boats coming in; evenings belong to the sunset, the new sea walk and the row of beach-side cafes and seafood shacks.
Hop a ferry from Malpe harbour to the cluster of islands famous for their dramatic columnar basalt rock — hexagonal pillars formed by ancient volcanic flows. The crossing takes about 15–20 minutes, with roughly an hour to explore the crystalline shore and tide pools.
Note: ferries pause during the monsoon (June–September) when the sea is rough.
Jet-ski, banana boat, bumper rides and parasailing right off Malpe Beach.
Catch pods of dolphins on a morning boat ride out towards the islands.
One of the coast's busiest harbours — local colour and the freshest catch.
Stroll out over the water on the new walkway, especially lovely at dusk.
The seaside Balarama temple right by the beach, in the villa's own locality.
Beach-side shacks and cafes for fresh coastal seafood and sunset chai.
Udupi's revered 13th-century temple founded by Sri Madhwacharya — the spiritual heart of the town and home of the famous Udupi cuisine.
Climb the 1901 lighthouse for sweeping views of the coastline, then watch the sunset from the rocks below.
An island fort ruin near the harbour, steeped in local history — a quiet detour for the curious.
The river-meets-sea drive at Maravanthe, plus waterfalls and temple towns dotted along the coastal highway.
October to February brings the calmest seas and the clearest skies — ideal for the islands and the beach.
Run roughly 9 AM to 5 PM and pause in the monsoon. Mornings are quieter; carry water and sun cover.
Autos and cabs are easy from the villa. We're happy to help arrange rides, boat tickets and day plans.
